The Cottage will open again this summer
One of Carolina Beach's most historic structures sits on the corner of Lake Park Blvd. and Cape Fear Blvd. It's been known as the Ogburn House, The June Inn (1948-81) and most recently (and regrettably) as Zorba's. (blechh!)
But to Carolina Beach locals it's simply referred to as "the Cottage."
It was built in 1916 for a man who worked for the New Hanover Transit Company, which was the primary developer of Carolina Beach.
You may be happy to hear that it will be re-opening this summer as "Havana's." The new owner, Pete Donat, was the general manager of the Oceanic Restaurant in Wrightsville Beach for roughly the last 15 years. The Oceanic was a part of the Atlantic Quest restaurant group, which was recently bought by an even bigger restaurant group out of Raleigh. Pete sold his share and struck out on his own. After looking from Surf City to Oak Island for a new location he found the Cottage.
"As soon as I walked in, I knew this was the place," says Pete.
Havana's will feature fresh island seafood, steaks and pastas. They plan to open early this spring.

Improvements are being made to the waterfront in Kure Beach. As you read this, they are installing new underground stormwater retention chambers along the dunes just north of the pier. Once upon a time, stormwater drained directly from the streets into the ocean, putting all sorts of yucky stuff in the water we swim and fish in. No more.
When this project is finished, ALL of the business district drainage will be filtered through underground chambers - significantly improving the water quality in Kure Beach.
The improvement was made possible by $30,000 grant from the North Carolina Department of Transportation and the engineering department at NC State, which provided free engineering services and will continue to monitor the water quality after the project is completed. Part of the contract with the DOT and NC State is for a complete restoration of the dunes after the installation is finished. Well done Kure Beach.
Mayor Mac Montgomery also tells us that a new round of drawings has been submited to the Division of Coastal Management for the Atlantic Avenue boardwalk.
He is hopeful that the town will get approval and have the boardwalk built before the summer season starts.

The Unique Boutique of Carolina Beach continues to offer great discounts as they clear room for summer fashions. Whoever started the rumor that the Unique Boutique has closed was wrong. Susan Ywaskevic's wholesale emporium has been in business for 15 years and according to her she's not going anywhere. She even has locations at the Blue Moon gift shoppes in Wilmington and I Am Salon in Monkey Junction. But don't take my word for it, call her yourself. (910) 458-4360
