Growing up in the late 1940s and ‘50s in a small textile village, many adventurous young men boasted of their hunting and fishing accomplishments along the mighty Haw River. The one tale that greatly captivated James H. Stout and his friends was the challenge of floating in a flat-bottom river boat to the Cape Fear River, and then on to the Atlantic Ocean, some 200 miles by water from my home in Haw River. Here is the firsthand account of their trip down the river.
